چکیده

This paper derives and analyzes continuous time random walk (CTRW) models in radial flow geometries for the quantification of non-local solute transport induced by heterogeneous flow distributions and by mobile-immobile mass transfer processes. To this end we derive a general CTRW framework in radial coordinates starting from the random walk equations for radial particle positions and times. The particle density, or solute concentration is governed by a non-local radial advection-dispersion equation (ADE). Unlike in CTRWs for uniform flow scenarios, particle transition times here depend on the radial particle position, which renders the CTRW non-stationary. As a consequence, the memory kernel characterizing the non-local ADE, is radially dependent. Based on this general formulation, we derive radial CTRW implementations that (i) emulate non-local radial transport due to heteroge-

Signature of non-Fickian solute transport in complex heterogeneous porous media.

We simulate transport of a solute through three-dimensional images of different rock samples, with resolutions of a few microns, representing geological media of increasing pore-scale complexity: a sandpack, a Berea sandstone, and a Portland limestone. We predict the propagators (concentration as a function of distance) measured on similar cores in nuclear magnetic resonance experiments and the...

Time Domain Random Walks for Hydrodynamic Transport in Heterogeneous Media

We derive a general formulation of the time domain random walk (TDRW) approach to model the hydrodynamic transport of inert solutes in complex geometries and heterogeneous media. We demonstrate its formal equivalence with the discretized advection-dispersion equation and show that the TDRW is equivalent to a continuous time random walk (CTRW) characterized by space-dependent transition times an...

Fractal mobile/immobile solute transport

[1] A fractal mobile/immobile model for solute transport assumes power law waiting times in the immobile zone, leading to a fractional time derivative in the model equations. The equations are equivalent to previous models of mobile/immobile transport with power law memory functions and are the limiting equations that govern continuous time random walks with heavy tailed random waiting times. T...

Slow transport by continuous time quantum walks.

Continuous time quantum walks (CTQWs) do not necessarily perform better than their classical counterparts, the continuous time random walks (CTRWs). For one special graph, where a recent analysis showed that in a particular direction of propagation the penetration of the graph is faster by CTQWs than by CTRWs, we demonstrate that in another direction of propagation the opposite is true. In this...

Continuous-Time Quantum Walks and Trapping

Recent findings suggest that processes such as the electronic energy transfer through the photosynthetic antenna display quantal features, aspects known from the dynamics of charge carriers along polymer backbones. Hence, in modeling energy transfer one has to leave the classical, masterequation-type formalism and advance towards an increasingly quantum-mechanical picture, while still retaining...
